While approximately 20,000 Americans are murdered each year, the literature on family members of homicide victims is limited to six empirical studies that focus narrowly on individual trauma while neglecting the efforts of family members to rebuild order and meaning in their lives. This family-focused study used interviews with families to examine the lived experience of 14 families and the meanings the family members gave to the loss of their loved one.

The hermeneutic phenomenological analysis method resulted in the identification of six essential themes of meaning that constituted the structure of the family's lived experience. The themes included (1) This is a nightmare you don't wake up from; (2) I feel betrayed by those I thought cared; (3) What rights don't I have any more; (4) Belonging relieves my alienation and loneliness; (5) I've stopped waiting for things to go back; (6) The intense pursuit of what matters is the meaning in my life.

The findings call into question certain practices and understandings. Death by murder is different because it is a public rather than private event and there is no closure. Hence, it may be erroneous to assess homicidal grief against the norm established for other kinds of death. The meanings that family members assign to their lived experience are based primarily on their responses to the decisions made by others outside the family. Hence, an ecological model of analysis may render a fuller understanding of their lived experience than the current focus on psychopathology. Family members are not able to make sense out of the senseless act of murder. Hence, the intense pursuit of what matters seems to be an equally legitimate mechanism to achieve purpose and a sense of coherence. The alienation and loneliness of family members is mitigated by a sense of belonging. Hence, the family unit offers treatment potential because it is an existing cohesive unit. Family members do not have a consistent pattern of feelings toward the murderer. Hence, the focus of future studies must go beyond the stereotypical portrayal of homicide survivors as trauma victims or seekers of vengeance against the murderer.
