Thesis (Ph.D.)--Howard University, 2006.
This study contends that the Black Arts Movement's canon should be expanded to include, in addition to his poetry, the fictional works of Henry Dumas. Though the work of a number of writers, from Zora Neale Houston through Rosa Guy, Sarah Wright, John Oliver Killens, Amiri Baraka, Toni Cade Bambara, and Toni Morrison could be examined in this light, the fiction of Henry Dumas, because of its pivotal features, discovers what Houston Baker, following Thomas Kahn, will later call an archeological project in Black fiction. This study explores the narrative practices of Henry Dumas as archival in its effect and (re)directive in it innovations. Specifically, this study finds that the stories of Dumas strategize a way of reading earlier African American narratives, anticipate the direction of, particularly, African American fiction that follow them, and fuel later theoretical premises based on intertextuality.
