Thesis (M.S.W.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2005.
The aging process in elders can often include the decline in vision and hearing acuity. As functionality of these two senses decline, this often impacts the individuals' physical and emotional well-being. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between perceived vision and hearing in elders and the depression and anxiety of those with perceived impairments. Secondary analysis was conducted on a preexisting data base of psychosocial assessments conducted by social workers with 1,102 elder participants. The mean age was 81 (SD = 7.01). Participants with dual sensory impairment were not found to have a significantly higher score for depression/anxiety or ADL assistance over participants with one impairment or those with no impairment. Future studies should use more standardized tools for measuring levels of depression and anxiety as well physical examinations to assess levels of impairment beyond participants self report.
