As the HIV/AIDS pandemic continues unabated in its third decade, the need for provider training becomes ever more pressing. People with HIV/AIDS are increasingly those who are most marginalized both within the health care system itself and the larger society. Increasing infection rates within certain populations, especially men who have sex with men (MSM), point to a growing disconnect between AIDS prevention messages and target audiences.

Distance learning has been proposed as a way of providing essential training for HIV/AIDS educators and service providers and generating critical reflection about the assumptions and underlying structure of HIV/AIDS education and prevention efforts. While the majority of the literature cites little or no difference in learning outcomes between in-person and distance education courses, the processes though which students acquire knowledge in these two teaching mediums are often markedly different. It is essential to identify and explore those aspects of the online education environment that enhance learning so that they can incorporated into the pedagogy and best practices of distance learning.

The study found that the majority of participants do exhibit critical reflection in the online discussion forum. The ways in which students demonstrate and engage in reflection is detailed and discussed. Recommendations for future research and practice are made.
