Police departments around the country have been under pressure to resolve the problem within their agency of the use of excessive force. Governing bodies and special commissions have urged upper police management to look at psychological testing as one avenue of uses to avoid hiring officers who are prone to engage in the use of excessive force. Many police departments have employed the use of psychological testing of all applicants. Research reveals that the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) is the one test consistently used by departments who perform psychological tests. The purpose of this study is to determine if the MMPI/MMPI-2 can identify officers who are prone to engage in excessive use of force. For the purpose of this research study, the issue will center on whether this one element of personality, impulse control, can be predicted before it occurs. A total of 923 officers will be sampled to see how many have received four or more complaints within a 3-year period. The sample's MMPI/MMPI-2 profiles, used for screening and hiring purposes, in addition to selected demographic variables will be evaluated for this study. The results of this study conclude that the MMPI/MMPI-2 can predict aggressive behavior. Out of 154 officers with four or more use of force complaints, 58 of them had elevated scores on the MMPI/MMPI-2's Scale 4 and 9, which are classified as the aggressive behavior scales.Subjects--Topical Terms:
