The philosophic conflict about the possibility of language to solve the traditional problems of philosophy that have been of concern since the Enlightenment is found in the different conclusions of Jurgen Habermas and Jean-Francois Lyotard. Their different solutions indicate the future of philosophy as a discipline concerned with the form and structure of human thought as it is expressed in language. This debate about what is often called the "Enlightenment Project" is shown to be relevant to the contemporary study of western philosophy. Ideas about the meaning and use of language are at the heart of many differences of opinion commonly heard in the public market of ideas. The current study is organized into four chapters: an introduction to consider the general intellectual background of the Habermas/Lyotard comparison; a chapter comparing each philosopher's theory of knowledge; a chapter on the language and society; a conclusion with final comment.Subjects--Topical Terms:
