German unification was the result of a peaceful revolution by the GDR citizens. Unification proposals of preserving an independent GDR through a "Third Way" gave way to unification by accession. Soon it became clear that forty years of division had produced two different societies. Easterners were viewed as losers and westerners transferred their institutions to the East. Easterners felt colonized and heimatlos, and created die Mauer im Kopf. Their selective memories of the GDR became known as Ostalgie, which found expression through unconditional loyalty to Ostprodukte.

Despite economic and social discrepancies, a sense of normalcy replaced the turbulent transition periods of the 1990s.
