The amount of information regarding the visual literacy terms pictures and illustrations divulged through the educational conduit and reaching teachers, scholars, researchers, and others interested in reading, is vast. Yet, the majority of research and discussion of pictures and illustrations is hidden within research conducted for other purposes, and in references relating to pictures and illustrations. Researchers published in Reading Research Quarterly from 1996 to 2005 value discussion of pictures and illustrations, integration of pictures and illustrations into the design of their studies, referencing others who discuss pictures and illustrations, and testing and assessment of students using pictures and illustrations. However, if a title search to find information regarding pictures and illustrations in Reading Research Quarterly from 1996 to 2005, only two articles appear.

The primary focus of this dissertation is to begin to develop a visual literacy research agenda regarding the significant contributions of researchers in the reading arena. It determines what scholars are reading and writing in regards to visual literacy, specifically pictures and illustrations. The scholarly community of visual literacists in the reading arena is initiated. The visual literacy constructs reading scholars address pertaining to pictures and illustrations in the reading arena are discussed.

Other findings include discussion of how researchers deliberate regarding the term visual literacy in Reading Research Quarterly. Although much of the dialogue concerning pictures and illustrations in Reading Research Quarterly is significant, some discussion simply leads us to contemplate further studies. Most of the discourse concerning pictures and illustrations revolves around picturebooks, and little attention is given to newspapers, magazines, environmental print, and other forms of written communication. References regarding pictures and illustrations found in Reading Research Quarterly originate in studies conducted outside the educational realm, and are published in journals outside the reading arena.
