The purpose of this study is to examine and describe children's musical improvisations, their processes and products, and the interactions that transpired within their groups as they planned improvisation performances in response to various prompts and situations. With the intention of probing children's means of defining, shaping, and evaluating their improvisations, three questions guided this study: (a) What is the relationship between children's social interactions and the processes and products of improvising music? (b) How do children respond to different prompts and situations? and (c) How do children express their values of what constitutes improvisation of sufficient musical integrity?

The study qualitatively examined children's improvisational activity within an elementary school music classroom in which the researcher was also the music teacher. Improvisation tasks were presented to two classes of fifth-grade children during twelve weekly music classes, and sixteen children were chosen for closer observation and an ongoing series of interviews. Data were gathered utilizing audio and video recorded observations of improvisation sessions, individual and small group interviews, and field notes. As fieldwork techniques informed the research method, constructivist theory informed the instructional design, in which the children participated in twelve sessions separated into three units according to prompts to inspire improvisation: a poem, a painting, and a musical composition.

Several dominant themes emerged through the processes and in the resultant musical products of the culminating "stage performances": (1) Social roles (leaders and followers) and relationships (long-term friendship) were often correlated to musical roles and relationships such as lead player and synchronized support players; (2) A four-part, non-sequential planning process including exploration, role-assignment, run-throughs, and discussion/negotiation was apparent within all focus groups; (3) Children demonstrated and expressed strategies (imitation, memorization, and motivic development) and valued considerations (organization, instrumentation, and ensemble cohesion) for planning and evaluating improvisation performances; (4) Children's musical products differed depending upon the nature of the prompt; (5) Task-imposed structure and teacher illustrations influenced the children's attention to certain performance techniques or musical elements; and (6) Children's music was embedded with material inherent in the musical and technical knowledge they had amassed over three years of Orff Schulwerk experience.
