The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of active student participation in music making activities, as part of an introductory one-quarter college music course, on cognitive gains and changes in attitude. The sample was composed of six sections of undergraduate non-music majors (n = 107) enrolled in an Introduction to Music course. Three control sections (n = 56) received lecture/demonstration instruction and three experimental sections (n = 51) actively participated in six instructor-designed music making activities in addition to receiving lecture/demonstration instruction. Three investigator-designed tests assessed acquisition of knowledge by participants. No significant difference between groups was found on Test 1 or Test 2. A significant difference in favor of the control group was found on Final Examination items not directly related to observation/participation activities. Significant changes in attitude were found in responses of participants in both groups, with no significant pre-posttest interaction. Some changes in attitude, perhaps reflecting instructional effects, were found towards musics of different styles. However, no significant interaction by group was found in attitudinal changes toward these styles.
