This study examined pulmonary function parameters in a group of very low birth weight (VLBW) children (n = 90) at an average age of 13 years in comparison with a control group (n = 58). Pulmonary function was tested using impulse oscillation, spirometry and handheld peak flow meters. The study aims were to describe lung function in VLBW children born during a period that bridged the introduction of exogenous surfactant treatment (August 1, 1988 to June 31, 1991), to compare lung function between VLBW children with and without bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), and to investigate change in lung function over time in VLBW children in comparison with controls.

520 $a Results of this study showed that VLBW children have poorer lung function at the average age of 13 years compared to controls. Several neonatal and early childhood variables were examined in association with this outcome. Results showed that this outcome was due to poorer lung function in the subgroup with BPD. There were no significant differences in pulmonary function outcomes between VLBW children born before and after exogenous surfactant therapy became generally available. In addition, lung function improved in both VLBW children and controls; improvement was an effect of normal growth and was not found to be related to neonatal lung disease. This study was funded by a grant from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.
