This study uses metaphor theory to examine metaphors of Argentina during the 1940s and 1950s, a time of great social change under the leadership of the charismatic leader Juan Domingo Peron. It is the first study of this scope to examine metaphors in Spanish.

520 $a This paper compares metaphors from three different corpora. The first set of metaphors was drawn from approximately 83,000 words of text from popular magazine and newspaper articles from the period 1936--46. The second database contains metaphors used by Peron during his first presidency. The third is a collection of metaphors in the current speech of Argentines, from interviews regarding their personal recollections of the Perons during the first presidency.
520 $a This study has four significant results. First, a group of dominant metaphors emerges in each of the three corpora, indicating that these may be good candidates for universal metaphors. Second, this study confirms previous research on politicians' use of metaphor showing that the most effective metaphors are rarely entirely new, but creative extensions of those already in currency. Third, it reaffirms previous studies indicating that politicians may choose not to use certain common metaphors because they are incongruent to their goals. Finally, it shows that Peron was successful in introducing an entirely new metaphor to Argentine society, one that reflects his base of support, POLITICS IS WORK.
