High input frequency versus zero-model constructions in the target language cause the significantly different rates of reductive simplification for function words expressing different semantic categories.

Since the omission and reduction of function words have been suggested as linguistic manifestations of simplification in contact varieties, this study investigates the use of two classes of functional elements, prepositions and definite articles, in three contact varieties of German.

The first variety is spoken by six Yugoslavian refugees residing in Munich, Germany. The second variety is spoken by six foreign workers living in Berlin, Germany. Both groups were judged to be undergoing natural second language acquisition (SLA). The third category of speakers consisted of two Yugoslavian refugees undergoing tutored SLA. They regularly attended German language classes.

For the analysis, the preposition and article forms in the speech data are tabulated to show matches and mismatches with the target norms. Under mismatches, zero realizations, manifesting reductive simplification in the varieties, are recorded. The semantic categories of the prepositions (location, direction, instrumental, comitative, recipient, benefactive, temporal) and the definite articles (case, number, gender) are also marked.

Stepwise regression analyses show significant interactions between mismatched zero prepositions and semantic categories, individual speakers, and speaker groups. For zero articles, semantic categories, individual speakers, speaker groups, and primary languages are selected as significant. The same interactions are found for the overall number of mismatched prepositions and articles.

The significantly different results for the individuals are interpreted as showing a dependency between the rate of reductive simplification and three extralinguistic factors: degree of contact with Germans, psychological distance from the target community, and extent of prior experience with a second language. The significance of speaker groups supports the general importance of these extralinguistic factors. The low percentage for the speakers undergoing tutored SLA indicates that formal language instructions aids in keeping reductive simplification low. While primary languages are not significant for the prepositional simplification rates, transfer is a strong force for article simplification rates.
