Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, San Diego, 1991.
In this dissertation, I address questions regarding the relationship between syntax and two phonological elements, namely rhythm and tone, supported by evidence derived from common speech, traditional poetry and folk song lyrics across Chinese dialects. The target triangle for exploration is embodied as follows:(DIAGRAM, TABLE OR GRAPHIC OMITTED...PLEASE SEE DAI)Rhythmic structure holds the key to the contrast between ordinary spoken language and more stylized linguistic forms such as poetry and lyrics, and tone sandhi applied to these two types of language is sensitive to domains defined on different bases. The present research investigates first the effects of syntax on linguistic rhythm, specifically how metrical structure may be syntactically defined, proposing a beat-counting theory of foot phrasing along the lines of a set of Rhythm Principles. It then deals with questions regarding the rhythmic conditioning of tone sandhi in terms of the phrasing of metrical and prosodic domains. The last observation focuses on some theoretical consequences of the finding in terms of revising the notion of the prosodic hierarchy and the nature of the syntax-phonology interface.Subjects--Topical Terms:
