Thesis (Ph.D.)--Illinois State University, 2004.
Within a framework of genre and narrative theories, this study examines the manifestations of ideology through social realism, speculative/science fiction, and historical fiction. The study begins with an examination of the ideological underpinnings of genre and children's fiction in general. Chapter II includes an examination of some recent developments in children's fiction, particularly in social realism. I examine how social realism directs readers' attention to contemporary cultural issues and how the genre communicates to readers how and what it means to be responsible citizens. Chapter III is a study of speculative/science fiction, or "sf", and how implicit, naturalized concepts are often revealed through the genre including the construction of childhood, language, hierarchies, self, and Other. The study continues with an introduction to historical fiction and an in-depth analysis of the use of time shifts in historical fiction. I pay close attention to the ideological functions of time shifts in historical fiction as well as the construction of self, history, and narrative in the genre. In Chapter V, I discuss pedagogical strategies and how genre might be used in the classroom. This also includes my observations regarding the circumstances under which students learn, the obstacles and contradictions college instructors often experience when teaching children's literature, and the use of a comparative genre approach as a way to examine the ideological foundations of genre and children's fiction.
