Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999--2002 were used to examine the relationship of body mass index, socioeconomic status, and diet quality among adults age 20 to 39 years old. BMI groups were classified according to standards set by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Socioeconomic status was assessed by poverty to income ratio (PIR). Diet quality was assessed by total dietary intake of energy, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, total sugar, total fat, saturated fat, monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, cholesterol, folate, vitamin C, calcium, iron, and sodium, as measured by 24-hour food recall. Statistically significant differences were observed for age, PIR, polyunsaturated fat, iron, vitamin C, fiber, and folate among BMI groups. No statistically significant differences were observed for total intakes of kilocalories, protein, total fat, saturated fat, monounsaturated fat, carbohydrate, total sugar, cholesterol, calcium, and sodium intakes by BMI group. These results illustrate that overweight and obesity may result from factors other than total kilocalorie intake.
