The purpose of this study was to compare Body Mass Index with gender, ethnicity, and socio-economic status in children age 6-11 years. Diet quality was examined across the BMI groups as well. Data from National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) 1999-2000 and 2001-2002 was used to examine differences in BMI of the different age, gender, ethnic, and socio-economic groups, as well as diet quality. The nutrients used to examine diet quality were as follows: carbohydrate, sugar, fiber, protein, total fat (monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and saturated fats), cholesterol, calcium, iron, zinc, and sodium. BMI groups were determined according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Growth Charts.
