Since 1992, USC athletes have amassed 15 NCAA team national championships, five more than in the previous 12 years. In the same period of time, USC's incoming freshmen have posted a 256-point jump in average SAT scores, and have raised the average GPA from 3.49 to 4.00.

520 $a But is there any correlation between the academic success and athletic success USC has achieved? Does success in one field impact success in the other? For students, a long list of factors besides athletics is considered when choosing a college, including majors offered and financial aid awards. For incoming student-athletes, coaching style and a tradition of excellence can affect the student's choice. When all factors are taken into consideration, it becomes clear that while an emphasis on strong academics helps the USC Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, a strong athletic program has not made the same impact on the academic quality of incoming freshmen.
