Kochanski, Adam.
Comparison of wind stress algorithms and their influence on the wind stress curl using buoy measurements over the shelf of Bodega Bay, California.
- 90 p.
Adviser: D. Koracin.
Thesis (M.S.)--University of Nevada, Reno, 2006.
In many cases, difficulties in obtaining the wind stress data cause the wind stress to be computed from bulk formulas that estimate the turbulent fluxes on the basis of standard meteorological data. Since this approach to the wind stress evaluation is used in climate and ocean modeling, the goal of the presented work was to compare various wind stress formulae, and to estimate to what extent the choice of the method alters the computed wind stress and the wind stress curl.

Three commonly used algorithms of various complexities were examined: the Large and Pond formula, which relates the wind stress only to the wind speed; the Hellerman and Rosenstein formula, which takes into account also the atmospheric stability determined by the difference between the sea and air temperature; and the TOGA COARE algorithm, which provides wind stress on the basis of an analysis of all surface fluxes.
