Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Iowa, 2006.
Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947) was a composer, singer, author, journalist, and conductor who was intimately involved in the musical life of Paris from the Belle Epoque through World War II. Born in Venezuela and educated in Paris, Hahn entered the Paris Conservatoire at age eleven, where he studied composition with Jules Massenet. Hahn met with success as a composer of melodie while still in his teens and became very popular as a performer in the salon. He was to compose over one hundred solo vocal works. Labeled as a salon composer, Hahn is more known today for his love affair with Marcel Proust and friendship with Sarah Bernhardt than for his musical accomplishments. Regardless of how he is perceived, singers have continued to perform and record his music.

Despite the increasing availability of Hahn's work in the United States, there is no single source singers can turn to that examines all of his currently available works for solo voice. The purpose of this study is to provide an introduction to the solo vocal works of Hahn for singers who wish to study and perform his melodies.

Beginning with a brief biography of Hahn, the study then examines his compositional style and the various influences on that style. This is followed by analyses of all of his currently available solo vocal works. Included in these analyses is an examination of his prosody, musical form, melodic construction, harmony, and accompaniment. English translations by the author are also included.

This study revealed a composer who is a gifted miniaturist, producing works that exemplify French restraint and sensibilite. Although neither an innovator nor a culminator, Hahn provides singers with a rich resource for melodies from the French repertoire.
