A preliminary experiment evaluated how much the soil from the field experiments was enriched by Pb (ranged between 38.8 mg Pb kg -1 soil and 156.7 mg Pb kg-1 soil), and the effects of acid digestion procedures (7) and instrumentation (2) on extracting soil Pb concentrations. The phytoextraction experiment determined if adding treatments (uptake enhancers (3) at different application rates (3) and the fungicide Benlate) to the soil would enhance Pb uptake by various crops (4). The effects on the biomass yields of crops were found to be crop specific. Highest Pb concentrations were found in sunflower tissue compared to the other crops studied. The immobilization experiment determined if incorporating amendments (8) at different application rates (3) with soil would immobilize Pb uptake by carrots. The amendments at any of the different application rates did not influence the carrot yields, and effects on Pb concentrations in the carrot tissue were minimal.
