Why does the military obey civilians? What accounts for civilian control of the military? Using Singapore as a case study, this paper offers an explanation of why the military stays subordinated to civilian rule by examining specifically the interactive nature of the civil-military relationship, while simultaneously taking note of other contributing factors. I give equal attention to how civilians exercise control over the military and how that control is maintained, as well as why the military respond to and accept such control. I document, through personal interviews, personal experiences, and secondary sources, how the civil-military relations of Singapore is in fact influenced and conditioned through both environmental and relational factors, and argue that the achievement and subsequent maintenance of civilian control of the military in Singapore is a direct result of strong socialization and institutionalization.
