Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Hawai'i at Manoa, 2006.
Cohabitation, the living together of two individuals having sexual relations but not formally married to each other, is not novel in the Philippines. It has been known to exist for centuries but its rising numbers and the consequent decline in the proportions in formal marriages especially among the youth could indicate not only a change in the character of unions but also of changing circumstances of the youth today---their accomplishments, their experiences, their economic status, their social environment and their attitudes and values; and of the institutions around them. This dissertation examines factors that affect cohabitation using survey data from the Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study, focus group discussions, and indepth interviews. There is no one framework that guides this research mainly because this is the first systematic study in the Philippines that focuses on cohabitation. Although based on a review of literature about cohabitation in western countries, studies about the Philippines, and some of my own experiences as a Filipina who grew up in this society, some guiding themes are proposed in the beginning of this inquiry. Those themes revolve around economic factors, cultural practices, attitudes, and laws. Not all those themes were supported by findings from this study. There are however, important findings that this study contributes to our knowledge of cohabitation among youth in the Philippines.Subjects--Topical Terms:
