Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2006.
An exploratory study of the internationalization strategies of eight Thai companies operating in Cambodia was conducted. The primary purpose of the study was to examine the understudied phenomenon of the international business activities of firms originating from a developing country. A four-level framework based on existing internationalization theory was used to structure and organize the study. It was discovered existing internationalization theory satisfactorily explained the behaviors of the larger two companies in the study; however, existing theory appeared to be inadequate in explaining the internationalization decisions made by the smaller owner-managed firms in the study. Important findings include the need to incorporate the findings from the discipline of entrepreneurship into the study of international business in the least developed countries of the world, the emergence of regional business strategies in the Greater-Mekong sub-region, and the identification of born foreign firms which are foreign owned firms with little or no connection with established firms in the country of origin of the owners.
