520 $a Soga Chokuan (active circa 1596-1610) and his son Nichokuan (active circa 1620-1660) were powerfully expressive painters who created highly charged, at times overtly violent images. Virtually every subject painted by Chokuan and Nichokuan became a vehicle for expressing suppressed tensions and peculiar fascinations.
520 $a The origin of the unorthodox artistic visions of these two painters is uncertain. However, a study of the documents of Chokuan and Nichokuan and paintings by their hands reveals that these two artists were probably descendants of the Echizen Soga school, a family also renowned for eccentric art. Nichokuan made a claim to direct descent from this family, and despite doubts that have been raised, Nichokuan's assertion appears to be valid.
520 $a A number of correspondences can be drawn between Chokuan/Nichokuan and the Echizen Soga school. There are similarities between certain paintings by Chokuan and works by an enigmatic artist known as (Li) Shubun. Careful analysis indicates that there were probably two artists who used this name: one active in the fifteenth century and the other active in the sixteenth century. Both artists named (Li) Shubun were seemingly associated with the Echizen Soga school. The later (Li) Shubun was working in the same vicinity and can be linked with several of the same persons as the descendants of the Echizen Soga family. It is work by this (Li) Shubun that resembles certain of Chokuan's paintings.
520 $a A person with whom the sixteenth-century (Li) Shubun and the descendants of the Echizen Soga family both seem to have associated--the lord Kanamori Nagachika--may even have been a patron of Chokuan and Nichokuan. Nagachika is one of the few persons whose social contacts correspond with those of Chokuan and Nichokuan.
