The Self-Management Group (SMG) approach was compared to a Waiting List Control Group (WLCG). The treatment was primarily based on self-management, behavior-modification principles taught in a classroom setting over a period of 10 weeks.

Despite the concern, interest and experimental activity in the area of exercise behavior to date, no approach that produces consistent and enduring adherence effects exists. The primary purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of multi-strategy, self-management approach on exercise habit formation and maintenance.

Twenty-eight municipal employees completed a pre-test, including a demographic questionnaire and the Self-Motivation Inventory (SMI) before being randomly assigned to two groups. Two Ss dropped out before treatment began. The results are based on the 26 who completed the treatment and post-test.

The relative efficacy of the self-management approach in increasing exercise behavior and in improving satisfaction ratings, exercise goal setting and exercise goal reaching ability were evaluated. The effects of time and treatment on SMI scores were evaluated. SMI scores were also used to predict exercise behavior. Post-test data were used in the computation of final analyses.

The results were: (a) significant differences were found between groups when percentage of exercise minutes were compared; (b) significant differences were found between groups when satisfaction ratings, exercise goal setting and exercise goal reaching ability were compared; (c) no significant treatment and time effects on SMI scores were found; and (d) No significant correlation between SMI scores and exercise behavior was found.

Limitations of the study were discussed. Implications of the results, with reference to the present sample and future research were addressed. Continued research exploring the compliance problem with exercise and other therapeutic regimens is recommended.
