Thesis (Ph.D.)--Queen's University (Canada), 2006.
This thesis makes two distinct contributions to our understanding of economic inequality. The first is to demonstrate theoretically and empirically the importance of frictions in the labor market (how easy or difficult it is for workers to find and keep jobs) in accounting for both the inequality in earnings and the much larger inequality in wealth. The income dynamics that are generated from the process of workers searching for jobs, both when employed and unemployed, lead to savings behavior that differs across current wages and, as a result, generates large inequality in wealth. The second contribution is to demonstrate the importance of accounting for intra-household inequality in measuring trends in individual consumption inequality over the past 30 years. The standard practice of using adult equivalence scales (which ignores intra-household inequality) provides a misleading estimates of both the level of individual consumption inequality and the trend over time.
