Thesis (M.A.)--Hofstra University, 2007.
The purpose of this thesis is to study two of the novels written by Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The two novels are Chronicle of a Death Foretold and Love in the Time of Cholera. The following will express the relationship between love and death along with other themes in the novels such as honor, and class structure of men and women. Before venturing into an examination of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's life it becomes evident that one must look upon his past to understand the direction in his writing.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez was born in Colombia, and he was greatly influenced by his maternal grandparents. His grandmother was very influential on the young author because of her way of telling fantastic stories without offering any evidence that they were not true. Gabriel Garcia Marquez was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982. The Nobel Prize Committee cited Garcia Marquez's novels and short stories "in which the fantastic and the realistic are combined in a richly composed world of imagination, reflecting a continent's life and conflict. He has made a significant impression on Latin American Literature. (www.encarta.msn.com)

Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novels demonstrate a significant thematic context in the development of love, death, honor, roles of men and women. The nature of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's literary works do not dovetail with modern day thoughts and beliefs, and many of his themes clearly demonstrate a culture difference albeit one that many would disagree with in the present.
