This study explores the continuing impact of the rhetoric of imperialism in post-colonial literature. The central discussion is situated in post-structuralist theories of the production of subject positions within language. The three novels--V. S. Naipaul's A Bend in the River, J. M. Coetzee's Waiting for the Barbarians, and Lewis Nkosi's Mating Birds--all use the discourse of gender to allegorize race relations. Naipaul serves to establish the rubrics of imperialist rhetoric. He naturalizes European colonial rule in Africa as the legitimate authority of the virile father over the pre-oedipal child. Movement into the position of the white man is accomplished through the homosocial use of the female body. Coetzee exposes the violence behind the myth of the colonial family. His benevolent colonial attempts to reject the masculine power of the colonizer by coding himself as the mother who mediates between father/ruler and child/ruled. His inability to sustain the contradictions of this position is also expressed in terms of gender, as the failure to escape the male body. Nkosi challenges the relegation of the African male to the position of the child. His narrator attempts to use the structure of colonial homosociality to enact a resistance to the icon of white masculine supremacy. However, his failure to destabilize the terms of the dominant discourse results in the production of mimicry rather than parody.

Together these three novels provide a narrative of oppression and failed resistance. Their pessimism raises the problem of agency and choice for the subject of post-structuralist theory. The dissertation concludes with the possibility that such pessimism may be inevitable and over-determined given the limited paradigms of (Eurocentric) post-structuralism.
