Utilizing Michel Foucault's ideas on power and discourse, this thesis proposes to prove that it is sufficient to study the narrative of a people to know its journey. Such a study would also show who in that society did and did not have power, who and what was excluded from discourse, how discourse originated and evolved, and how it was circulated and controlled.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Starting from the premise that all knowledge is governed by the power relations that exist when that knowledge is imparted, thesis confirmation is accomplished through the application of Foucault's principles of inversion, discontinuity, specificity, and exteriority. Three novels written throughout the first forty years of post-Civil War Spain are used as examples: Camilo Jose Cela's La familia de Pascual Duarte (1942), Luis Martin-Santos' Tiempo de silencio (1961), and Juan Goytisolo's Makbara (1980).
