The thesis analyzes the implication of the multidimensional semantic possibilities that the discourse of fragmentation and discontinuity allows, drawing from Pierce's idea of the semiotic foundation of the openness of the linguistic sign.

The first chapter studies the complexity of the authorial concept that characterized Roa Bastos' novel due to the multiplicity of writings and their ambiguous and doubtful origins. Based on Reader Response theories, the implications involved in embedding, indirect style, quotation and other forms of narrative intermediations are analyzed to determine their ultimate effects in the reader while processing and interpreting the text.

Following Ludomir Dolezel's concepts on the relationship between text, reality and reader, the second chapter analyzes the extremely fluid and neutral fictional world portrayed in the novel which, based on the lack of a visible and reliable textual authority, provokes the break with the established conventional rhetoric of reading.

The third chapter analyzes the permeability and transparency that characterizes the discourse of Roa Bastos' novel suggesting the gaps and breaks in human consciousness. Following Freudian and Lacanian concepts on Psychoanalysis, the study also explores this idea of transparency as a correlation to the psychoanalytical discourse that takes advantage of ambiguity and contradiction in order to uncover the hidden truth of the unconsciousness. It is also linked to the author's attempt to restore the "otherness" of the censured voices of heteroglosy as well as the hidden and unspoken latency that lie within the subject's unconscious, the restoration of the invisible links covered by the signifier.

The thesis studies the manner in which Roa's novel, by allowing the reader to escape from a previously defined trajectory of textual interpretation, proposes new routes where the presence of heteroglosy and polisemy bring back the Absence as well as the non-manifested meanings. Restoring the unspoken and the suppressed, the reader will see through the text as through a transparency, a more real dimension of reality.
