Scotland had a noticeable and lasting impact on German romanticism. By tracing a preromantic interest in Scotland through to the Scottish-inspired works of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Moscheles, Wagner, Gade, and especially Mendelssohn, I find specific musical hallmarks to be associated with an image of Scotland. Such hallmarks have little to do with actual Scots song, despite the settings Haydn and Beethoven made. Examples of Scottish music came to German lands only very late in the Scottish enthusiasm. Rather, musical hallmarks result from an image of Scotland which was borrowed from literature and the reputation of Scottish and ancient Celtic music.

Ossian and the Scottish ballads in Percy's Reliques strongly influenced the creation of German literature and genres. Sir Walter Scott also fed the stormy and fantastic image of Scotland; eventually Robert Burns became popular, though his folk elements were mitigated. Northern themes were central in the creation of German national identity, and Scotland was the primary representative of the north before 1840. Beliefs of German-Celtic kinship, the role of climate in artistic temperament (Herder, Rousseau), and growing claims for oral tradition led Germans to adopt Scottish accomplishments as their own.

Lacking believable examples of Scottish music, and imagining extant Highland music to be related to the Germanic past, Germans avoided exoticizing Scotland via imitation or quotation before about 1850. However, Scottish-associated texts inspire a set of musical features after about 1770, including Sturm and Drang and ombra topics, often in the melodrama and throughcomposed vocal ballades of Zumsteeg, Zelter, or Schubert. Many of these musical features match vague descriptions of ancient Celtic music, and are eventually employed in instrumental and other Scottish-inspired works, such as Mendelssohn's, where scholars have often looked inappropriately for imitations of eighteenth-century Scottish music.

This dissertation examines the German circulation of Scottish sources 1765-1850, and compares Scots song with German impressions of Scottish music. These impressions are applied to music which bears features of a northern style. My title, The Highland Muse, refers to Scotland's role as an inspiration to a romantic and inherently German manner, rather than merely the object of exoticism.
