Thesis (M.S.)--San Jose State University, 2007.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between performance and workplace attire. Specifically, this study asked the question: of formal and casual dress, which one results in greater performance based on the definition of performance in this study? The study measured the performance of 14 bank tellers using longitudinal data. The means of four variables representing performance were analyzed. Results of the analysis indicated that teller performance was superior while dressed in casual attire as opposed to formal clothing. Results also indicated that there is a detrimental effect when changing from one form of clothing to another, regardless of the order of switch. This study's findings lend support to previous research and the idea that casual clothing does have positive effects in the workplace, as well as offers valuable insight for organizations concerned with the issue. Future research needs are discussed.
