This dissertation is a study of how White teachers of Alaska Native students learn to implement a culturally based mathematics curriculum based on the knowledge of Yup'ik Eskimo elders. I focus on three teachers who have differing degrees of success in using this type of curriculum to determine the factors important for teaching in this way and how they can be promoted through professional development.

My study looks at the following questions: (1) How do teachers implement the MCC curriculum in the classroom? (2) What impact does the curriculum have on the dynamics of the classroom in terms of patterns of discourse and student engagement? (3) Is a third space operating in the classroom and what are the characteristics of this space?

To answer these questions, I developed three case studies and a cross case analysis. My findings indicate that the development of what theorists term a "third space" (Cook, 2005; Lipka, Brenner & Sharp, 2005; Dunlop, 1999), that is a classroom culture that has elements of both the community culture and that of mainstream school, is a path to successful implementation of a culturally based curriculum.

I use these findings to develop a model for promoting the construction of a third space in classrooms. This model includes foundational issues, such as trust, that must be addressed before a third space can be constructed. The model also describes the components of an effective third space: cultural content, pedagogical strategies that are congruent with cultural norms for the transmission of knowledge, and high cognitive demand. Finally, the model describes the types of classroom discourse that result from the establishment of a third space and thereby provide an indicator of its existence in the classroom.

Although this study is focused on the use of a culturally based curriculum for Alaska Native students, I believe it has implications and relevance to teachers in diverse situations because it addresses the general question of how teachers work in classrooms with students who are culturally and racially different from themselves.
