This dissertation, "Helene Cixous: A Space for the Other---In Between Forgetting, Remembering and Rewriting" examines the narrative position of the subject in relation to the Other in Helene Cixous's works: Or, les lettres de mon pere (1997), Les Reveries de la femme sauvage: scenes primitives (2000) and her writing on Clarice Lispector. I focus on two major points. First, I propose that Cixous rewrites the identity of the subject/Other in such a way that the boundaries between the two are blurred. The androgynous nature of the protagonists in her works subverts the gender binary opposition, bringing issues of plurality and culture to the fore in terms of subject identity. I analyze the ramifications that the volatility of subject/Other positions have for elements of autobiographical narrative in her works. Secondly, Cixous deconstructs the role of the reader and in particular, in the case of her reading and interpretation of Clarice Lispector, she challenges us to question the role of the "critic."

In Chapter One, "Elements of the Autobiographical in Cixous's Writing," I examine her writing against the genre of autobiography, weighing different theories. I compare Cixous's writing with Serge Doubrovsky's "autofiction." I coin the term alter-fiction to describe the process in which her subject becomes transformed by the Other and exposes cultural injustices that repress the Other.

Chapter Two, "The Question of Gender and 'Ecriture Feminine' in Or, les lettres de mon pere" studies the narrator's complex relationship with the Other as experienced through the loss of her father. I propose that the father's androgynous nature confers a dual loss for the narrator, that of both father and mother in that the father serves both a maternal and a paternal role for the daughter. I then consider the intertextual connection between Judith Butler's theories for de-centering the subject and those of Cixous through the use of subversion in language.

Chapter Three, "Re-reading, Re-writing, and Re-creating the 'Critical' I" proposes an alternative reading of the role of the "critic" in Cixous's interpretation of the works of Brazilian writer, Clarice Lispector. The poetic quality of Cixous's "ecriture feminine" and its ability to create a new artistic work in the reading of the other text is closely examined against her critics' concerns.

Chapter IV, "Rendez-vous with the Subject and the Other in Les Reveries de la femme sauvage: scenes primitives" (2000) analyzes issues of intertextuality between Cixous's work and the eighteenth-century philosopher, Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Reveries of the Solitary Walker (1782). I explore the metaphorical significance that the term reveries has as a psychological space and how it positions the reader in each work.

The Conclusion speculates on the possibilities for change in terms of gender norms and tolerance for differences. It raises questions such as what impact will writing have in bringing about systemic changes in society. How will it influence society's reception of the Other?
