Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Pennsylvania, 2007.
My dissertation takes as its subject the Cowlitz Indian Tribe of southwestern Washington State and its peoples' and leaders' efforts to create, re-new, and sustain group identity. In an effort to understand the performance genres used specifically within the Cowlitz Tribal context, this examination will focus on some of the narrative strategies of Cowlitz people and two Cowlitz leaders. I will utilize a basic analytic strategy for considering a genre in context, remembering that narrative often emerges to correct potential rupture existing between documented history and lived culture. I seek to discover how the Cowlitz leaders articulate and understand themselves and their history, and hence bring understanding, by means of their authority, to the Cowlitz group as a whole.Subjects--Topical Terms:
