Conifer plantations were widely planted on abandoned farmland throughout New York State, USA in the early 20th century. Conifer plantations have been criticized for their lack of biodiversity but little is known about the influence of plantations on diversity of birds, terrestrial amphibians and exotic earthworms. Therefore, birds, amphibians and earthworms were sampled via point counts and visual area surveys on plantations, natural forests and border areas to determine the effect plantations have on diversity of publicly-owned forests in south-central New York State. Two distinct assemblages of avian species were found for natural and plantation forests. Common terrestrial salamanders displayed a correlation with natural forests but no correlation was determined for anurans. Exotic earthworms were present in natural and plantation forests but reached higher densities within the border areas. The effect of conifer plantations on diversity appears to be taxon-specific on publicly-owned forests in south-central New York State.
