Organizational leaders in the private sector in Nigeria operate in an unpredictable organizational environment with a lot of challenges. The purpose of this study was to investigate the challenges facing the leaders. The research questions posed in this study focused on the background of the challenges facing the leaders, how organizational environment in Nigeria impacted their performance, and how the challenges could be addressed. The theoretical framework that guided this study was informed by leadership, organizational change, and systems theories. The research methodology was based on phenomenological approach; purposive sampling method was used to select 10 organizational leaders who participated in this study. Data were collected via interviews, and the open coding technique was used to assign equal values to the categories that emerged from the data. Data were analyzed by grouping together the common themes in each category, and a description of the overall views expressed by the participants was constructed. The findings of this study revealed that political instability, corruption, lack of social amenities, lack of skilled manpower, social unrest, inconsistent government policies, insecurity, and crisis in the Niger Delta region were impacting the performance of organizational leaders in Nigeria. This study recommends that the government should provide social infrastructures such as electricity and transportation for the growth of private sector in the country. This study would contribute to social change in Nigeria by informing necessary changes that could result in increased foreign investments into the country.
