The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a comprehension monitoring approach of teaching word problems in remedial/developmental mathematics on the achievement of Mexican-American students as compared to the traditional approach. The students in both the treatment group and the control group were administered the Addison-Wesley Publishers Remedial Algebra pre-test at the beginning of the course. Fifteen weeks later, the same test was used as a post-test to determine the success of the comprehension monitoring approach. The data analysis indicated that the students enrolled in the treatment group using the comprehension monitoring approach demonstrated significantly higher gains in remedial algebra than the students enrolled in the control group using the traditional approach.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A total of 213 students participated in this study. Results indicated that the comprehension monitoring approach utilized effective teaching strategies. This strategy was used by the researcher as the approach to teaching remedial algebra word problem solving to Mexican-American students. Studies conducted regarding the achievement effects of comprehension monitoring found significantly greater achievement in treatment classes than in control classes. The mean scores on the post-test of the students enrolled in the treatment groups were higher than the mean scores on the post-test of those enrolled in the control groups. There is sufficient evidence about the benefits of strategy instruction so that strategies can be used to improve student learning.

It is recommended that further research be conducted on effectiveness of the comprehension monitoring approach used in this study in other content area courses, such as history, political science, and English. It is also recommended that teachers participate in a training program to become familiar with different techniques, curricula, and materials that may improve learning in any classroom.
