Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 2006.
This dissertation gathers together three related fields---queer studies, theories of space and place, and the critical analysis of Greek tragedy---to forge a new line of inquiry. Intended as a complement to contemporary work on ancient spatial practices, my study explores the metamorphosis of tragic space from our ancient record of it---the original play text---to our contemporary projection of it in the form of recent Western adaptations.

I begin my study with an examination of the myth material that underpins the fall of the house of Atreus before examining the ancient plays that form the backbone of the study: Aeschylus's Oresteia trilogy and the Electra plays of Sophocles and Euripides. In my readings of ancient versions of the story, I ask what effects ancient playwrights create by changing the characteristics of setting, that is, the qualities of time and place that frame the action. Next, I examine the story's transplantation across the Atlantic in Eugene O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Electra (1931), arguing that O'Neill's replacement of the American Northeast for ancient Argos is the primary means for his queer reconfiguration of the story. Finally, I consider Charles Busch's recent play, Die! Mommie! Die! (1999), as an adaptation that lays claim to a queer afterlife of tragedy through a double replacement, the westward movement of the story to Hollywood and the reinscription of tragic drag in the author's performance as a queer Clytemnestra.

This genealogy of the Oresteia and its adaptations sheds light on the selective dance of memory that playwrights exploit in transposing ancient tragedy to American places, opening up a time warp that enables an assertion of queerness as foundational to Western cultural mythology. Both an analysis of a phenomenon and an intervention in itself, this study is designed to draw out the significance of this struggle for meaning within the oldest of the Western literary and theatrical canons.
