This study investigated the following questions: What are the perceived sources of occupational stress among directors? What are the perceived levels of boundary-spanning, conflict-mediating, role-based, and task-based stress experienced by the directors? What influence, if any, do selected demographic variables have on the levels of boundary-spanning, conflict-mediating, role-based, or task-based stress?

The sample was obtained from individuals employed as directors in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. There were 66 directors who participated in the study representing a return rate of 81.4%. The theoretical framework for the study was based on a transactional model of stress reflected in stages one and two of the Administrative Stress Cycle (Gmelch, 1988). Data for this study was collected from a demographic survey accompanied by the Administrative Stress Index (Gmelch & Swent, 1984) and a survey of additional stressors encountered on the job reviewed and piloted by a panel of directors from Bucks, Lehigh, Monroe, and Northampton counties in Pennsylvania.

The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, and simultaneous multiple regression. Simultaneous multiple regression was utilized to determine the best predictors between boundary-spanning, conflict-mediating, role-based, and task-based stress and the independent demographic variables.

The results of the study found that directors perceive low to moderate levels of occupational stress. None of the demographic variables were found to be significant at the .05 level for predicting occupational stress on each of the four sources of stress. The study found that boundary-spanning sources of stress was identified as the highest perceived level of stress. Some of the more frequently identified stressors were dealing with state and/or federal regulatory agencies, excessive workloads, and dealing with financial issues and the school board.

The implications of this study suggest that although directors, in general, perceive low to moderate levels of occupational stress, boundary-spanning and task-based stressors are sources of the most stress in the workplace. An awareness of this information can provide directors with an understanding of the potential sources of stress and lead to the development of an action plan to mitigate any negative consequences of occupational stress.
