Thesis (Ph.D.)--Harvard University, 1993.
This dissertation is a study of the Ichij o y oketsu written in 1006 by Genshin (942-1017) of the Japanese Tendai sect. This work is a comprehensive study of the central Buddhist soteriological question as to whether or not all beings have the capacity to attain Buddhahood. This topic has been a point of bitter debate in Japan between the Tendai and Hoss o sects. On the basis of the doctrines of the One Vehicle in the Lotus S utra and the Buddha-nature in the Mahaparinirvana S utra, the Tendai sect held that all beings can attain Buddhahood. In contrast, the Hoss o sect claimed that all beings belong by nature to one of five different spiritual lineages (Sanskrit: gotra), not all of which terminates in complete Buddhahood. In fact, the Hoss o sect held that certain beings, called icchantikas, are innately devoid of all religious aspiration and are consequently unable to gain release from the cycle of transmigration.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Both the Tendai and Hoss o sects based their doctrines on authoritative Indian Buddhist s utras and treatises. However, it was in China that these two positions, universal Buddhahood vs. limited Buddhahood, became the focus of heated debates. Even after the debate was settled decisively in China in favor of the former position, it continued to be a major source of conflict in Japan. Genshin's Ichij o y oketsu, an erudite and systematic defense of the Tendai doctrine of universal Buddhahood, is an important document in the history of this debate in Japan.

In my dissertation, I will first provide a brief biography of Genshin, next review the pre-Genshin debates over universal Buddhahood in India, China and Japan, and finally consider the main points of the Ichij o y oketsu, focusing in particular on its treatment of the doctrines of the One Vehicle and Buddha-nature.
