This thesis is an elementary study for content-based image retrieval. It will ultimately contribute to developing computer systems for retrieving images in varied databases using natural language. The short-term goal is to develop a computer system that can automatically index images using terms that denote spatial relations. This thesis, however, focuses on the preliminary work towards the short-term goal.

520 $a First, an experiment was designed to better understand how human subjects describe relative positions of image objects. Next, 1920 spoken descriptions were collected from 32 human subjects. Target spatial information was extracted from these descriptions by two research assistants. Important conclusions were drawn from the analysis of the extracted information. They validate the use of multiple subjects' data for system training, and identify the limitations of this approach. Finally, suggestions on system design are presented based on the above analysis.
