A cornerstone of the human auditory system is its ability to recognize and appreciate music and speech. At its most basic level, music is made up of melodies and rhythms, which are the relative changes in pitch and temporal rates, respectively, for a series of musical notes. Speech is also composed of sequences of different pitches and temporal rates, however pitch changes carry prosody information (for non-tonal languages), while semantic information in contained in the temporal rate. How is an acoustic signal's temporal rate and pitch encoded in the auditory system? For my dissertation, I have investigated the neural coding of a sound's temporal properties by single neurons in the auditory cortex of the marmoset.

Outside of primary auditory cortex, little is known about the auditory cortex of primates, and therefore the first step of my thesis was to confirm that three core areas existed in the marmoset (like other primates), and that they differed in both their response properties and tonotopic gradients. For the second part of my thesis, I examined how pitch (specifically missing fundamental pitch) was represented in auditory cortex. Pitch-selective neurons found near the anterolateral border of primary auditory cortex were identified as encoding both the pitch of the sound (for both pure tones and missing fundamental sounds) as well as the salience or strength of the pitch. For the final part of my thesis, I investigated how temporal rate (in the perceptual range of acoustic flutter) was encoded in the three core areas of auditory cortex. I found that a dual temporal/rate code is used in primary auditory cortex, however an unsynchronized, monotonic rate code becomes the dominant representation of flutter in the two core fields rostral to primary auditory cortex. This transformation in the neural coding of acoustic flutter suggests that a function of the rostral fields is to temporally process narrowband sounds.
