Thesis (Ph.D.)--Illinois State University, 2007.
The intent of this dissertation is to allow students who have had no training in the Old English language to translate the riddles of the Exeter Book after a short introduction into the system of Old English. The objective is not that this work substitute for a course in Old English, but, rather, that it capture student interest in the subject and encourage students to pursue more advanced classes in Old English language and literature. The dissertation is written with nontraditional students in mind---those who may be independent scholars and/or from working-class families---and, as such, seeks to recover that particular anonymity that makes the riddles uniquely approachable by those who often sublimate their critical thinking to what they perceive to be overwhelming intellectual authority. This is achieved through two main techniques: (1) by removing the suggested solutions of modern scholars, thereby encouraging students to think about their own solution possibilities, and (2) by teaching the students to use the glosses so that they can translate the riddles themselves, without an intellectual mediator.

Chapter One outlines the theoretical underpinnings of the project as a whole, whereas Chapter Two serves as the introduction to the textbook. In this chapter, students are given historical background about life within a medieval monastic community, the Exeter manuscript, other riddle collections circulating at the time and, finally, the ways in which riddles work and may have been used in a monastic setting. Next is an introduction to the Old English language presented in a workbook format, enabling the student to acquire the necessary knowledge he/she will need in order to use the extensive glosses found in the following chapter. The majority of the textbook is comprised of individual glosses of each of the ninety-five riddles of the Exeter collection.
