Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Southern California, 2005.
The purpose of this study was to investigate: (1) the major parenting styles in a Chinese cultural setting when a fourth parenting style is introduced; (2) how Chinese parenting styles and perceived classroom goal structures impact the development of different levels of goal orientations, such as mastery approach, mastery avoidance, performance approach, and performance avoidance goal orientations; and subsequently (3) what goal orientations are conducive to academic achievement in a Chinese cultural setting. Thus, the aim was to explain relationships between parenting styles, goal orientations, and academic achievement in a Chinese cultural setting. The sample was Chinese students from a high school in Hong Kong. The importance of this study was to fill the gap of ethnic differences in parenting styles and their impacts on the development of different levels of goal orientations among Chinese students.

In the past, research mainly focused on Baumrind's (1971) three parenting styles when measuring Chinese parents' styles. This paper included a fourth parenting style, "training", proposed by Chao (1994). In addition, past research on goal orientations and academic achievement mainly used the dichotomous mastery versus performance goals; however, this study expanded on past research to further examine the impact of different "levels" of goal orientations (approach and avoidance goals) on academic achievement among students in a Chinese cultural setting.

The results of the study indicate that Chinese parents in Hong Kong score higher on the "training" parenting style and both parenting styles and classroom goal orientations play an important role in students' personal goal orientations development. Relationships could not be found between goal orientations and academic achievement.
