In recent years, because of budget constraints in education, elementary classroom teachers have had to face the dilemma of trying to meet the musical needs of their students without the help of music specialists. For one unschooled and unskilled in music this is a daunting if not entirely impossible task. It is much less threatening for teachers to approach the teaching of music by integrating it into a curriculum they know, for example, that of social studies, thereby making it an integral part of the academic experience rather than an isolated exercise.

It is the thrust of this project to search out and classify multimedia musical materials that will aid the classroom teacher in integrating music into the social studies curriculum. Once collected, such material will be organized into a resource library to be housed in the Music Department at Claremont High School. This paper will survey the materials by region or area of the world, identifying the ways in which the material may enhance the curriculum and bring the musics of the world's cultures to the child.

The musically unsophisticated teacher will thus be able to enrich the lives of children, leading them to honor and share freely in all the cultural diversity of our multimusical heritage, and bring them to accept the aesthetic qualities in all world music.

We must struggle to understand how, as music educators, we can begin to validate the music that comes into our rooms the first time a child enters school. We must begin to understand that there are almost no human beings who come into our space who are not loaded down with powerful music traditions--and sometimes many music traditions. vskip27pt

It is not possible to examine all materials, as the explosion of information that is occurring is feeding new aids to education every day. It is hoped that this will be a beginning that will encourage continued collection and use of new materials as they become available.
