The recent interest in the teaching of music from a wider cultural context has resulted in a population of music teachers that needs to be trained in the area of world music. The common vehicle for this type of training is the in-service workshop. Providing lessons and materials that are authentic and true to the traditions which the music represents is also considered a method which enables teachers to deal with these musics.Subjects--Topical Terms:

It has been questioned whether teachers' musical perspectives can be expanded in these abbreviated formats. This study utilized a 9-hour workshop on Puerto Rican music and corresponding teaching materials as treatments. The purpose of this was to determine the effects of the workshop and materials, together and separately, on the music teachers self-efficacy and willingness to teach Puerto Rican music. The measurement instrument and the instructional materials were developed for the investigation.

Twenty-seven upper-elementary music teachers participated in the study. All subjects volunteered to participate in the workshop and to receive lesson plans based on the same material covered in the workshop. The experimental group received the workshop and the lessons. The control group received only the lessons. Both groups were asked to use the lessons in their regular music classes and were allowed equal time for this. The experimental group was tested three times. The control group was tested twice.

Results indicated a significant difference between efficacy scores among groups and within groups. No significant difference was found between willingness scores. Based on these results it was concluded that given a group of willing teachers, self-efficacy can be improved by either a workshop rich in cultural and experiential activities or by the distribution of materials which follow the same approaches. The combination of workshop and distribution of materials is the most effective and efficient of the two methods.
