The purposes of this study were to develop an instrument to examine goal orientations for disability sport participants and to explore the factors that contribute to the socialization of individuals with physical disabilities into competitive sports. The measure was created to explore the perceptions of ego, task, and social orientations of athletes with physical disabilities. Item content validity for the instrument resulted in acceptable Aiken's V values using feedback from panel reviewers (N=7). Additional estimates of test-retest reliability supported use of Disability Sports Participation Questionnaire. These correlations were high for ego (rs = .91, p<.01), task (rs = .97, p<.01), and social (rs = .89, p<.01) subscales. In order to secure a representative sample, data was collected from nine events at Midwestern, Southern, Pacific, Rocky Mountain regions of the United States. Participants were 144 ( X =25) athletes with physical disabilities, age 15 to 42 years. Data reduction using principal components analysis allowed for estimations of validity and resulted in support for use of the 3-component model (explaining 40% of the variance). The estimates of reliability and validity are encouraging for use of the current goal orientations scale. Multivariate Analysis of Variance was conducted to explore differences between the goal orientation scores in males and females. No significant sex differences were found in this data in relation to ego (F = 0.52, p>.05), task (F = 4.13, p<.05), or social orientations (F = 0.68, p>.05). To determine if study variables were related, bivariate correlations were analyzed with key participation factors. These analyses resulted in moderate to low relationships between scale scores and other age related disability factors. These data support the notion that goal orientations are important to many disability sport athletes. This sample listed peers (40%) as the main socializing agents into sports participation, additional variables sited by participants included family (22%), service providers (13%), and physical activity specialists (12%).
