Thesis (M.A.)--Sarah Lawrence College, 2007.
The rapid increase in the Hispanic population in the United States, and the evidence of disparities in adequate mental health services for Hispanics, have placed increased focus on understanding and meeting the mental health needs of this population. Questions about the effectiveness of traditional therapeutic techniques with this population have led theorists to propose alternative approaches. These include an increase in attention to the role of countertransference in work with Hispanic clients, and in the case of those clients who are bilingual, a focus on understanding the role of language in clinical work. This essay presents the results of a case study that explores the impact of countertransference and language on treatment with a Hispanic mother-daughter dyad. The findings reveal the significant role these two factors played in shaping the work, and point to the importance of analyzing their role in treatment.
